It’s not often the first port of call to leave Rome right when you get to Rome, but, if you’re off on a road trip around this part of Italy, Palazzo Petrvs should be added to your map. Surrounded by Etruscan caves, medieval palazzos and a 13th-century cathedral, this hotel claims space up high in the hilltop town of the laidback Orvieto. Vintage lamps, frescoes and vaulted ceilings have been restored with bold stripes (mimicking the Duomo di Orvieto,) and cool artwork – we’re slightly obsessed with its seriously smart interiors and design kudos. And each room feels a bit like it has a secret, a hidden balcony for one. The candlelit restaurant in the 16th-century church is also a welcome break from the more rustic spots to eat around Umbria, although we love those too.
