For a designer who has built a shoe empire around a single colour, Christian Louboutin decided to celebrate his signature red in a new creative space in a sleepy and slow-paced village about an hour and a half south of Lisbon. Meaning red in Portuguese, Vermelho celebrates design, detail and craftsmanship and is creatively curated to feel more like staying at a very elegant home than a boxy hotel. Louboutin worked closely with all of his favourite artisans and the design firm Caiado to fill in the gaps with items from his personal collection – frilly frescoes, gilded chandeliers, hand-painted tiles and fabrics by Carolina Irving. This is an adults-only discovery, for creatives, artists and those who appreciate high decoration and lots of flamboyant flair in a small-scale space.
