Staays

A remote retreat in the Abruzzo mountains, cobbled streets and stone buildings that date back to the 13th century lead to rustic rooms that are completely steeped in history. Strong details like freestanding tubs and fireplaces (plus very old school chunky tassled room keys and fruit baskets that look like still life paintings) have been adapted with modern hints, including underfloor heating, but we appreciate the need to champion and celebrate Italian artistry – we’re looking specifically at the handmade candles, soaps, and blankets. It’s a pretty destination: gazing out over rolling hills 1,250m above sea level. We’re smitten by the candlelit, locally-sourced breakfasts in the Cantinone; it feels old-fashioned and essential, as is an aperitivo later in the day.
