Interiors at this small design hotel are by Pierre Yovanovitch who has drawn on traditional hand-painted wall tiles and parquet floors while adding his signature touches – pops of colour and bespoke curved furniture. Throughout the 19th-century guesthouse, there is striking artwork commissioned for the space – a cluster of glass bubbles in pale pink suspended over the kitchen table, for example. The hotel’s working winery is as smart as the rest of the property – anyone curious about wine is welcome in the barrel room. Otherwise, guests are able to munch on custard tarts and fruit bread at breakfast on the terrace with sensational views over rolling Douro landscape and then kick back by the infinity pool.
