Most people head to Sintra for its winding roads and to see the famous towering yolk-yellow palace but past these more trod-on spots is a super-secret stay decked out in 1970s-style by Danish photographer Mikkel Kristensen. Interiors are minimalist and have been thoughtfully decorated with vintage mid-century pieces, and playful pops of the hotel’s signature deep green. No two rooms (there are eight) are the same – each with its own balcony or terrace for breezy views over the bougainvillea-lined pool. Marqi is a vibe – with guests able to whip up and down the coast in a vintage Mercedes or seen totting a distressed branded baseball cap they just bought from the lobby shop.
