For four decades, this has been the ultimate spot for any serious foodie, given that chef-patron Raymond Blanc OBE has poured his expertise and know-how into the manor. Along with the clever people behind Belmond, this hotel (with a destination restaurant) is a lesson in top-tier hospitality. For Blanc, it was ‘love at first sight’ when he stumbled upon the country pile in the 80s, but now, it’s run in tandem with the hospitality pros at Belmond. Signature service is well-oiled, where discreet staff slip across lawns lined with lavender and a kitchen garden that supplies some goods to the 2 Michelin-starred restaurant. Yes, a lot is about the food (as it should be) but this is also a restorative, sophisticated, comfortable and incredibly smart stay to find some peace and quiet. You certainly won’t go home hungry.
