Entry to car-free Wengen is an experience in itself: visitors chug in on a single-cog railway that’s been running since 1898. This grand hotel has been open for nearly as long, but a 2024 refurb from Beaumier (sister spots include the wildly photogenic Les Roches Rouges on the French Riviera) has added a breath of fresh air to its old bones. The sunny yellow shuttered Wes Anderson-esque exterior remains but inside there are now contemporary design touches such as light-wood accents and mid-century furniture. Everything has been crafted to make the most of the extraordinary panoramic mountain views. Is this the most exclusive place to stay in an already exclusive village? We might think so.
